Community Resources and Benefits
It takes more than food banking to end hunger. To help our neighbors live full, healthy lives, benefits like food assistance are critical tools for economic mobility and weathering tough times. The Feeding Texas Community Resources Team is dedicated to helping Texans improve their overall economic security through benefits and assistance programs that can tackle the root causes of hunger, like poverty and inequitable food access.
Application Assistance
In partnership with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC), food banks in the Feeding Texas network offer application assistance and case management to all 254 counties in Texas. Our network helps Texans apply for programs like SNAP, Medicaid, Medicare, TANF, and CHIP. Our Community Resources Team helps our food banks build and reinforce capacity for these benefits programs by providing localized quality assurance, technical assistance, program evaluation, and comprehensive training.
Helping Texans get SNAP is a major focus for our network as it’s our largest and most effective tool in the fight against hunger. SNAP helps millions of families around the nation put food on the table by giving them monthly benefits they can use to buy groceries. In 2022, SNAP helped over 3.44 million Texans put food on the table during tough times. It’s also a cost-effective way to tackle hunger – for every meal that a food bank puts on the table, SNAP provides nine. Referral Services
Food insecurity doesn’t happen in isolation – those experiencing food insecurity often face other challenges when trying to meet their basic needs. Our Referral Partner Program (RPP) is a comprehensive, statewide referral and follow-up program designed to offer comprehensive assistance and referrals to households navigating multiple needs. Each food bank’s Referral Specialists assist food bank clients with additional services. Food banks will complete a needs assessment, provide resource referrals and periodically follow up with the food bank client over a 12-month period. The RPP connects our neighbors to vital resources and helps move them toward economic stability.
