Feeding Texas provides application assistance for programs like SNAP and Medicaid across the state to ensure Texans have the resources they need to live healthy, full lives.
All 20 of our food banks have dedicated staff that offer application assistance, and 18 are part of regional contracts with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) to amplify this critical work. Collectively, our network reaches all 254 Texas counties with application assistance — offering support statewide, even in areas where food banks are not contracted with HHSC.
HHSC manages programs that help families with food, health care, safety, and disaster services including programs like SNAP, Medicaid, WIC, and many more.
Feeding Texas has contracted with HHSC for nearly two decades to help Texans apply for programs like SNAP, Medicaid, Medicare, TANF, and CHIP, make referrals to other community resources, and raise awareness of HHSC services in communities across the state.
Our Feeding Texas Community Resources Team helps food banks build and reinforce capacity for these benefits programs by providing localized quality assurance, technical assistance, program evaluation, and comprehensive training. In 2023, our network provided SNAP application assistance to over 57,000 households.
Feeding Texas contracted with HHSC to provide SNAP-Ed nutrition education services across the state from 2015 until Congress eliminated funding for the program for FY2026. Our food banks taught over 5,000 nutrition education classes each year through this statewide nutrition education program. In 2023, our network reached 71,600 participants through 5,204 nutrition education class sessions.
Our network’s ongoing partnership with HHSC amplifies our impact. SNAP is our nation’s most effective tool in the fight against hunger, and for every meal that a Texas food bank puts on the table, SNAP provides nine. Food banks can support even more Texans in accessing the resources they need to feed themselves and their families because of the support we receive from this critical partnership with HHSC.
